The results are in for this year’s photo contest, hosted by the HHS Photo Club. Over one hundred entries were submitted in two categories: color and black & white. Only seven of these images were awarded with the following prizes: first, second and third in both color and black & white and best in show, which was awarded to the strongest photograph.

Judges Colleen Gianino and Kris Kellenberger, teachers in the art department, sorted through the entries searching for the most compelling photographs. When asked what went into the judging process, Gianino responds, “I mostly looked at good quality compositions. Composition, to me, is key in a really successful photograph. I also looked at the quality of the print or the shot. The last thing I looked for was the mood the photograph may have evoked.” She explains,“It is always extremely difficult to choose the winning photographs. They are all quite good.”

The student photographers that entered the contest range in experience and ability. Advisor of the photo club, Sterling Worrell, states that, “the photo contest is a perfect way for students interested in photography, whether experienced or not, to share their work with peers.” Every image is judged fairly, the judges do not know who the entrants are, allowing for minimal bias.

Overall, the turnout of the photo contest was a success. Gianino exclaims, “The photos were amazing. My favorite was the one where the girl was walking down the stairs. I love the angle the staircase creates along with the mystery behind who the legs belong to. This piece has a great narrative.” Hopefully photo club will host another successful photo contest next year!
