Two of the Lady Hillers teams, varsity field hockey and varsity volleyball, helped in the fight against breast cancer. October is breast cancer awareness month and each team participated in games that raised funds for breast cancer research.

The varsity field hockey team, sporting socks and headbands covered in breast cancer ribbons, took on a win on Friday October 12 at 3:45.

“We hope to have a huge amount of support and awareness for the breast cancer game. Our team’s goal is to raise more than we were able to raise last year,” reported captain Lauren Ballantyne before the start of the game. “We enjoy being able to give back for a good cause and will jump at any opportunities.”

The varsity team made a deal with the parents of players to raise money for the “Play 4 a Cure” cause that supports breast cancer research. Every time a goal was scored, each family was willing to donate $20, and the family of the player who scored was willing to donate $30 to the charity. The proceeds of the “Play 4 a Cure” game go to the American Cancer Society.

“This is an annual tradition for the field hockey team. We try and support other organizations throughout the season as well. In the past, we have run ‘Michael’s Run,’ (a 5k race that donates proceeds to the Respite Center in memory of Michael Lisnow) but unfortunately this year the race was during SATs,” stated captain Julie Younis.

After the team took home a 2-0 win against Medway, $710 was donated from the players’ families.

“I am really proud of the team. I think one of the reasons we played so well was because we knew it would benefit a great cause,” said junior, Emma Flaxman.

In addition to the $710 the team raised from the game, they made a unanimous decision to donate another $250 from their own fund to the “Play 4 a Cure” cause.

However, more than just the field hockey team is doing their part to raise money in the fight against cancer. The varsity volleyball team also supported breast cancer awareness month by putting on a “Dig Pink” game.

“Dig Pink is a match we do every year and the money raised is always donated to the ‘American Cancer Society’. This cause is close to a lot of our hearts because so many people are affected by it,” said captain Tess Chandler. “Our goal for the Dig Pink game is [to raise] around $2,000. Hopefully we will meet that goal and have a ton of fans who support both our team and the cause we will be playing for.”

The volleyball team raffled various baskets off as a fundraiser throughout the game in hopes of meeting their goal.

The varsity Volleyball team, dressed in pink jerseys, took on Holliston on Wednesday October 17 at 6:30 and ended with revenue of $2,200 and a profit of over $1,500.

Both teams will continue to annually support breast cancer and donate the profit to cancer fighting organizations.
